Cawdor Castle
“Living in a place like this in the Middle Ages
must have been dreadful. Smelly, dark, draughty,
uncomfortable and either dangerous or dull.”
“Yes,” said the companion, “but different to being
5 dead.”
Cawdor Castle is best to know/known for its appearance
in William Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth”.
However, Shakespeare used a sourcebook
that didn’t/hadn’t get its history right and
10 the geography is worse. The real Macbeth or
“Thane of Cawdor” is/was born in about 1005, 45
but Cawdor Castle was not built until the late
th Today, Cawdor Castle is a major tourist attraction.
The official leaflet claims that you are visiting
“The most romantic castle in the Highlands”.
It is situated between Inverness and Nairn.
A tour of the castle is special indeed. You are
walking through the real living quarters of the
family (which they still occupy/occupied in the
winter months). The room notes written by the
6
century. So it is impossible for King Duncan
to have lost any blood or Lady Macbeth much
sleep in this particular house. Although the murder
of Duncan takes place in Inverness Castle, it
is now often associated with Cawdor Castle. The
woods mentioned in the play are also miles
away from the castle. The late Lord Cawdor
once said: “I wish the Bard had never been
writing/had never written his dammed play!”
th Earl Cawdor are priceless: full of mischievous
humour and little tongue-in-the-cheek stories
(“In 1967, when the wall was being replastered,
the room had been/was discovered and was
found to contain the following: one dead bat”, or
“Mind your head, unless you are a Papuan
Pygmy” or “over the little door, the picture is of
Sarah Mary Cawdor’s dog and was commissioned
by Queen Victoria who/which had the
terrier kidnapped so that it could be painted, secretly,
as a surprise present.” or “The incredibly
boring lump of rock in the right corner is …”).
There are beautiful gardens with nature trails
and a maze. The village of Cawdor and its traditional
Cawdor Tavern are also worth a visit.
Dalmunzie Castle – A country house hotel
Dalmunzie Castle is a stunning Lairds mansion
with towers in the Scots Baronial style. It stands
proudly at the head of a 6500 acre estate dating
back to 1510. Enjoying magnificent mountain
scenery, Dalmunzie is located in a hiding/hidden
part of Highland Perthshire, yet it is less than
two hours from Edinburgh airport. Peace and
tranquillity is/are a feature of life at Dalmunzie,
with fires and lounges contributing to a relaxing
haven from the outside world. At Dalmunzie,
you have enjoyed/will enjoy bedrooms with a real
