The inauguraltrain hauled by the ”Adler“ travelled the 6 kilometres in 9 minutesat roughly 40 km/h, a spectacular speed for that time and aquantum leap in comparison with the stagecoach, the mainmeans of transport of the day. Gerolsteindepot was the centre of oper ations. The locomotives were fuell ed andwatered in Gerolstein roundhousewhile visitors looked on.At the same time, the DeutscheBahn Museum in Koblenz-Lützelhad a locomotive exhibition.Visitors enjoyed rides on a re -plica of the ”Adler“ (built in 1935)and on the first German-builtlocomotive ”Saxonia“, and watch -ed vintage diesel and electriclocos on parade.Steam trains also chugged alongthe Brohl valley meter-gaugebetween Brohl in Rheintal andEngeln in the Eifel. Two steamlocomotives joined service car -riages to bring back memories ofthe era of slow trains with tinklingbells.Altogether, 35,000 passengerswere counted on board thehistoric vehicles. Hundreds of railenthusiasts and onlookers fromGermany, England, USA andJapan lined the routes to get aglimpse of the choo-choos andtake photos.Jubilee year 2010 offers manymore opportunities to experiencerailway history live.
