Further information on Austrian companies: www.advantageaustria.org AUSTRIAEXPORT Walter Koren Head of Austrian Trade Leiter Austrian Trade Fine interiors and interior furnishings from Austria interior décor and interior design: this mainly means furniture. austria has a long and noteworthy tradition in this field. just one good example was the Wiener Werkstätte gmbh, an exemplary productive community of architects, artists and designers. Founded in 1903 by josef hoffmann, Koloman moser and industrialist Fritz Wärndorfer, who made a name for himself as a patron of the arts, it was modelled after britain’s arts and crafts movement. the cofounders’ goal was to give new life to the field of decorative arts. they collaborated with the artists of the Vienna Secession and the city’s School of decorative arts, producing furniture and items of daily use. For a time, the artists of the Wiener Werkstätte enjoyed such success that retail shops were opened in New york, berlin and Zurich. From 1905 to 1911, josef hoffmann built Stoclet house in brussels and the sanatorium in purkersdorf. the furnishings used in both came from the Wiener Werkstätte exclusively. the annual sales generated by furniture produced in austria has already exceeded 2.7 billion euros, and the main market continues to be our neighbour germany. italy occupies second place, the united Kingdom was third among Eu countries in both 2007 and 2008, followed by poland. Switzerland is austria’s most important export market in the EFta zone, at approximately 100 mn euros. particularly positive trends can be found among exports to the rest of Europe, i.e. nonEu countries. For example, about 7.6% more furniture was exported to croatia in 2008 (worth about 20 mn euros), and there was also an increase in sales to russia, to approximately 18 mn euros. japan is austria’s main market in asia. this broad topic involves more than just furniture. in this edition, auStria EXport will also report on feats of engineering, shop fitting, new trends in lighting, floor and wall coverings, textiles for the home, accessories from hammocks to ceramics, and true “specialities” such as tiled stoves and other methods of space heating. in all these areas, enormous potential (including for exports) has been demonstrated over the past decades by austrian companies that work with interior design and interior décor! ❚ 134/2009 www.advantageaustria.org 3
