Fine home textiles from <strong>Austria</strong><br />

home textiles are fabrics for furniture, blankets, bed and table linen, drapery<br />

and curtains, and drapery for windows and beds, otherwise known as pelmets,<br />

that are used in interior design and décor.<br />

It all began in 1810: apprentice weaver<br />

Franz backhausen moved from Vienna to<br />

cologne, germany, where he obtained his<br />

master craftsman’s diploma. in 1849, his<br />

sons Karl and johann founded Karl Backhausen<br />

& Co., and the factory in austria’s<br />

Waldviertel was built in 1870. beginning in<br />

1869, during the historicist period, and later<br />

that of jugendstil, backhausen furnished the<br />

textiles for a number of prestigious buildings<br />

in Vienna, such as the State opera house,<br />

the parliament building, the burgtheater, the<br />

musikverein and the imperial residences.<br />

With over 3,500 original designs from<br />

more than 300 artists of the days of the Wiener<br />

Werkstätte, backhausen own the world’s<br />

largest archive of textile designs. today, their<br />

exquisite fabrics grace famous hotels, castles,<br />

theatres and concert halls in austria<br />

and abroad. the company exports to 40<br />

countries around the world.<br />

J. M. Fussenegger Textilwerke of Vorarlberg<br />

have been in business for over 180 years,<br />

and their product line includes fabrics for<br />

fashion and furniture, and curtains and<br />

drapes, in addition to bed and table linen.<br />

creative employees, with the aid of modern<br />

technology, make Fussenegger one of<br />

austria’s largest textile manufacturers. in<br />

1832, david Fussenegger founded his own<br />

company for finishing cotton, and Fussenegger<br />

Textil GmbH now specialise in the<br />

manufacture of jacquard­woven blankets for<br />

children or adults, for private or commercial<br />

use, for sleeping or leisure time. the product<br />

line also includes accessories for the home<br />

such as decorative pillows and kimonos.<br />

Exquisite home textiles and fine decorative<br />

fabrics made by Baumann Dekor of<br />

gmünd catch the fancy of interior designers<br />

and others who plan residential spaces.<br />

thanks to more than nine decades of experience<br />

producing textiles, the Waldviertel<br />

company’s employees are able to react flexibly<br />

to customers’ wishes and guarantee costefficient<br />

production, even of small batches,<br />

quickly and in outstanding quality.<br />

Anton Haidenthaller GmbH & Co KG of<br />

Salzburg were founded in 1881. Wholesale<br />

trade with supplies for wallpaper hangers<br />

led to the creation of their home­textiles department.<br />

in 1998, haidenthaller became<br />

one of three authorised gorE­tEX® Workwear<br />

partners in austria, and the outdoor<br />

and trekking leisure line was introduced.<br />

Since 1960, the Friedhelm Löscher company<br />

of mieming, tyrol, have left their mark<br />

on the textiles sector with a wide range of<br />

offers relating to bale and coupon service.<br />

löscher’s varied collection was honoured<br />

with the international trophy for technology.<br />

the boss’ son günter löscher joining the<br />

company in 1991 heralded an increase in<br />

exports to neighbouring countries, and löscher<br />

curtains are now used around the<br />

world.<br />

Vossen, a manufacturer of terrycloth,<br />

have over the past few years successfully<br />

turned a seemingly simple product into a<br />

brand­name article which is now popular<br />

around the world. For more than 80 years,<br />

the company has shipped high­quality<br />

terrycloth all over the globe. Each week,<br />

approximately 60 metric tons of raw yarn<br />

are processed into velour, woven and knit<br />

terry, etc., resulting in about 100,000 items.<br />

Framsohn Frottier GmbH, founded in<br />

1908 by Franz amstetter, have gone from<br />

coloured weaving to specialising in terrycloth<br />

products, and can now boast of their<br />

own ready­to­wear department. For the<br />

100th birthday in 2008, this tradition­rich<br />

company in the Waldviertel presented the<br />

world’s first low­energy towel, the Edelweiss<br />

line, which was developed in collaboration<br />

with lenzing ag.<br />

Hefel Textil GmbH, founded in 1907, are<br />

one of Europe’s most successful manufacturers<br />

of bed linen, and their production chain<br />

includes weaving, finishing, willowing, carding,<br />

stitching, design and manufacture of<br />

ready­to­wear items.<br />

Haller Textilwerke GmbH have produced<br />

high­quality table linen since 1963,<br />

using natural materials such as cotton and<br />

linen. comprehensive concepts in the areas<br />

of table linen, kitchen textiles and terrycloth<br />

cover the entire living space. ❚<br />
