Austrian speciality
from tiled and pellet stoves to fireplaces that need not be connected to a
chimney: austria offers a number of possibilities relating to traditional and
sustainable sources of pleasant heat for interiors.
The austrian tiled­stove association
(Österreichischer Kachelofenverband)
represents approximately 600 members
from industry, commerce and the
trades. throughout the country, there are
about 480,000 tiled stoves, and each year
some 15,000 new ones are built. of nearly
3.5 mn domestic households, 13.8% currently
have tiled stoves, generally a fireclaybrick
stove that burns briquettes or wood.
two centuries after its establishment,
Vienna’s Fessler company (in mozartgasse)
have worked in the three areas of stove fitting,
sales and production of ceramics. Fessler
are one of the few stove­fitting companies
that still make the überschlagsofen,
which was built to order during the baroque
period according to a special method. on
top of that, Fessler are one of just a few austrian
companies that restore old stoves.
one somewhat larger company is Flechl
Ofen GmbH in Kaindorf. in 2004, handmade
ceramics were produced there for the
first time (in cooperation with griffnerhaus
and the Kohlbacher company), and one year
later, a long­term partnership began with
pabneu and Sedda. later, in 2007, a showroom
centre was opened in Kaindorf.
more than five decades of experience
fitting stoves, the most modern technology
available in the field, and both traditional
and contemporary architecture are used
in the stoves produced by Salzburg’s
Prometheus. precise creative planning,
high­quality materials and the best possible
installation service represent the foundation
of their success. on top of that, the joy in
practicing an old craft with a great deal of
artistic tradition plays an important role.

include the burgenland’s Keram Leszkovich,
Albin Freinberger in pucking and Franz
Krekoschka of linz.

the Cult Fire team in mauerbach, lower
austria, has been working with ethanol fireplaces
since 2002.
For 20 years now, the IGNIS company in
rohrbach has been well­known for all things
involving soapstone stoves, wood­burning
stoves and fireplaces, in addition to the renovation
and construction of chimneys.

expertise are highly respected.
as the professional association for
austria’s pellet industry, proPellets Austria
represents more than 50 companies in the
fields of pellet production, trade and manufacture
of boilers and related equipment.
Each year, an average of 10,000 new pelletfired
heating systems are installed in austria.
domestic companies are also extremely
successful with exports of wood­fired heating
boilers: their export share currently amounts
to approximately 30%. Even in germany,
where the number of new pellet­fired
heating systems has more than doubled in
the past few years, three of every four boilers
that use pellets come from austria.
ÖkoFEN, their headquarters in lembach,
upper austria, are a leading source of pellet
heating systems in Europe, and about 75%
of their products are exported. the company
has general agents in belgium and England
and subsidiaries in germany, italy,
France and Switzerland. in 1997, cEo herbert
ortner presented the first type­tested
pellet heating system in austria. this
groundbreaking achievement was followed
by years of research and further development.
in 2004, ÖkoFEN became the world’s
first manufacturer of pellet heating equipment
to build a heating boiler with condensing
technology. in such systems, the heat
of exhaust gas is used, which results in cost
savings of up to 15% compared to conventional
systems. ❚
