Recenzje i omówienia121the Mount Fuji or geisha. Meanwhilethe Japanese designers dealt with theproblem called “Japanese style” bycreating the structures, which wouldenable them to express their inbornsense of beauty.First Sato was interested in theuniversal international art, which wasthen the American pop-art.However later, he noticed thatimitating the American patterns is nota good idea and he realized that as thepop-art was the means of expressing theoriginal American culture, there couldbe an original way of creating the formsof visual expressions which would beoriginally Japanese and that he shouldwork on it. He came to the conclusionthat he could focus on the essence ofthe Japanese painting and introduce it inorder to give the contemporary spectatorsa comprehensible message. Thus inhis works appeared not only Japanese, but also typical for Sato motives suchas the Moon, the Mount Fuji, a hand, etc. where the light and shadow playedan important role.As the curator of the exhibitionnoticed during the opening speech, the Japanese posters after 1960 gainedtheir own original Japanese character, totally different from the Americanpop-art. The works by Sato Koichiare interesting examples of this trendin Japanese art. There are hundred ten posterspresented in the exhibition, all withdetailed translations and explanationsmade by the translators. The postersoriginated from all periods of Sato’sartistic work. The size of most of theworks is 103x73 cm, but there are otherposters, as well (e.g. 103x220 cm, 73x52cm). Among the presented artworksare contemporary theater posters andthe traditional ikebana posters, commercialposters for the companies, posters with the classical haiku poetryand many other colorful works wherethe old harmonizes with the new.The organization of the exhibitionwas subsidized by the Ministryof Culture and National Heritageprogramme “MECENAT” and theMarshal’s Office of Kuyavian-PomeranianProvince.by Terumichi Tsuda
