8 Summary
The world civilization diseases obesity develops increasingly precarious, and
even in Europe, the prevalence of overweight and obesity is still rising.
The Traditional Chinese Medicine (following TCM) sees obesity as a disturb-
ance of earth energy, whose organs spleen (Pi) and stomach (Wei) are respon-
sible for the production of Gu-Qi (Food Qi) from nutrition. In case of this energy
disturbance the moisture supported by food will not be transformed sufficiently.
Following the insufficient transformation you will find an accumulation of mois-
ture and mucus, which are causing overweight and obesity.
„Seminarkabarettist“ (seminar comedian) Prof. Dr. Bernhard Ludwig set an ex-
ample fighting against obesity with his 10in2 ® Power Program, which is simple
to carry out. The alternate-day fasting has significant health benefits in addition
to weight reduction on blood lipid levels, immune system and carbohydrate me-
tabolism and in animal studies, anti-aging effects were observed.
From the perspective of TCM in alternate-day fasting imbalances such as gen-
eral Qi and Yang deficiency, spleen Qi deficiency, spleen Yang deficiency and
stomach heat and stomach fire were identified. These syndromes can be com-
pensated very well by the 5-element diet. Although fasting in TCM cannot be
recommended in principle, the combination of alternate-day fasting with the 5-
element diet is a good way to reduce weight on a healthy way.
In order to use this concept as a long-term sustainable model of nutrition bene-
fit, has still to be explored long term.
