Equipping an airport tower
with most modern and reliable
MSR technology is always
a special challenge for
a company which produces
building automation. The
equipment and supervision
of flight security concerns a
highly sensitive area.
Under the leadership of the
building automation branch
of Plüth in Rhein-Main,
two towers which were ordered
by the “Deutsche Flugsicherung
GmbH (DFS)”
were finished during the last
few weeks. First, the tower at
the Frankfurt / Main airport,
which still had to be built
and then also the new building
at the “Berlin-Brandenburg
International Airport
(BBI)”. In January 2009, the
foundation stone was laid
for the airport tower Frankfurt
am Main. Its commissioning
is planned for June,
2011.
New towers in Frankfurt/
Main and Berlin
The new building of the 70 m
high tower was necessary,
as the new runways on the
south side of the airport were
no longer observable. With
100 square meters, the new
tower pulpit is immediately
40 square metres bigger than
the present one and provides
room for 12 employees.
With a height of 72 m, it is
the second-highest tower in
Germany and therefore a
landmark of the new capital
airport. The newly developed
elliptical tower pulpit
with only four carrying
supports has room for 11
employees, and in case of
expected growth in traffic
volume, further capacity for
additional work space is possible.
The technical standard
A very high standard was
chosen for the technical
building equipment. In both
projects redundant ventilation
systems and redundant
plants were integrated for
warmth and cooling supply
into the BACnet automa-
tion system COSMOS 4000
OPEN. This makes sure that
in case of controller failure
another controller will take
over the regulation, control
and automation of the ventilation
systems and other
functions in seconds. Altogether,
ten high-performance
controllers were installed
each tower.
The electrical work was also
integrated in to the COS-
MOS system. Owing to the
size of the I / O modules (automat
profile) these could
be installed directly into
the electrical distributors.
On this occasion, the lighting
and blind control was
also integrated in the BACnet
controllers. With room
control units, which were
connected via CAN-Bus,
individual control is possible.
Further Bus-protocols
like M-Bus and MOD-Bus
are already installed in the
COSMOS 4000 OPEN controller.
The controllers of the
heat pumps, as well as numerous
universal measuring
devices and the USV, are
coupled via MOD-Bus.
The compact size of the
COSMOS I/O modules allows
a decentralised placement
in the rooms. Data exchange
in the rooms is possible
via the BACnet network

and also via CAN-Bus. The
room automation controls
temperature, lighting and
solar protection in the offices
exactly according to the
requirements of the employees.
264 I/O modules were
installed in the Frankfurt
tower. These are 2,740 physical
data points. In the Berlin
tower 2,560 physical data
points were implemented
and 254 I/O modules were
used.
