two of the deepest thinkers about the history
of political thought, who respectively tried
to imagine a republic without a nation (Abbé
Sieyès) and a nation without a republic (Jo-
The volume also exposes the undeniable
empirical and theoretical shortcomings of
the widespread notion that opposes civic and
ethnic nationalism, as demonstrated by the
historical nationalization of the Republic in
France . At the same time, a constructivist
analysis of nation as an open political process
and a detailed examination of the discursive
plurality of contemporary nationalism
are developed . Finally, the author proposes
a political theory that includes a concept
of nation that is neither essentialist nor com-
conditions of the Kosovar population are still
in a dismal state . Corruption and organized
crime continue to block the development of a
choice institutionalism and the constructivist
literature on political rhetoric . Its main argument
is that ambitious sectoral climate policies emerge
in situations in which the opponents of such
policies run out of socially sustainable arguments
to defend their positions . The framework
is applied to five case studies of EU climate policy-making
concerning cars, buildings, the EU’s
emissions trading system (EU ETS), the promotion
of renewable energy sources as well as agricultural
greenhouse gas emissions .
t is possible to identify at least three ways
of conceptualizing change in American
democracy . First, change is seen as a product
of development . Here change is linear, it signifies
progress . The second model sees change
as coming from the reflection of the relationship
between values and their institutional
manifestations . It has a distinctly conservative
character . The third approach sees change
as an innovation, often a product of technological
advancement . Each conceptualization
of change stipulates a different set of problems
which need to be addressed . The first –
functional approach – is mainly concerned
with the efficiency of the socio-political system
. The second – intellectual approach –
poses questions about the system stability
and legitimacy . The third – mechanical approach
– inquires about the system’s adaptability
. These and other dimensions of change
are explored by the contributors in their analyses
of domestic and foreign policy, cultural
and social conflicts, economic relations,
ideologies, and public discourse in contemporary
America .
