His Royal Highness: The Prince of Wales happily
acknowledges 40 years of coming to Klosters!
47
The Prince of Wales celebrated 40 years of skiing in Klosters last
March. His immense loyalty and association with Klosters and the
surrounding area is both meaningful and very special.
In honour of the occasion, the iconic lower
section Gotschna cable cars were once again
painted in red and the name ‘The Prince of
Wales’ reinstated – not only on the right hand
car but on both. In fact his name was put on
the top cars of the second section a few years
ago so we can say Gotschna is truly a ‘Royal’
mountain! During his visit last March, the Gemeinde
Klosters-Serneus hosted a reception in
the Klosters Arena where His Royal Highness
was able to chat and reminisce with many locals
and others who have played a part in his
ski holidays here over the years. His Royal
Highness was introduced to the region by his
great friends Charlie and Patty Palmer-Tomkinson
when they came on a skiing trip together,
staying in a chalet in Wolfgang, from the 31st
January – 10th February 1978. Charlie PT and
the now retired local Swiss policeman Stefan
Cadruvi are the only ones who have steadfastly
skied with The Prince on every trip since.
The Prince of Wales is an accomplished, fast
and fearless skier though nowadays stays on
the piste. In the past, led by his experienced
guide Bruno Sprecher, he would enjoy many
favourite off piste runs such as down to St
Antonien and sunny days on Pischa. The
Prince relishes his low key visits to Klosters
and visiting his favoured restaurants where
he can enjoy a simple lunch of Nüsslisalat
and Bündnerfleisch. We salute and thank
you Sir for all you have brought to Klosters
with your presence and that you will continue
to come and ski here for many more
years to come. ◊
