Expansion of recycling production makes sense
from a sustainability perspective
In the definition of the metal statistics, we see an increase
in primary aluminum production to approx. 70.5 million
t of primary aluminum by 2027 (see Figure 6). China
has already expanded its production to 37.3 million
t in 2020, an increase of 4.3% compared to the previous
year, thus significantly determining the 3.1% increase in
global production. In 2027, China will produce well
over 40 million tons of primary aluminum, securing its
leading position in the global market.
China is also one of the leading users of scrap today.
The country used over 40% of total scrap in its aluminum
production in 2019 (see Figure 7).
This implies that the gap to expected consumption will
have to be covered by recycled aluminum. In this way,
the aluminum industry is taking considerable account
of the sustainability concept. Above all, it is positive that
the production of one ton of aluminum from scrap requires
only about 5% of the amount of energy needed
to produce one ton of aluminum from bauxite. In addition,
aluminum can be recycled any number of times
and, unlike other raw materials, there is no downcycling.
Conclusion
We expect aluminum consumption to continue to increase
in the coming years, which will be accompanied
by rising scrap use from a sustainability perspective.
Dr. Heinz-Jürgen Büchner
According to surveys by The International Aluminium
Institute, a good 20 million tons of post-consumer scrap
were already used in the global aluminum industry in
2019. This avoided around 300 million t of greenhouse
gas emissions. In addition, about 14 million t of aluminum
scrap was also recycled directly in production.
