or suppress. A climatic change that affects us directly, that
is and remains tangible, not least through the flood disaster
in the Ahr valley last summer. It throws the responsibility
back on us and raises the question of a future building industry
that, even according to European will, must radically
change in the coming years and decades in order to enable
future generations to have an existence worth living. The
enormous interest of our students in these topics is shown,
for example, by their participation in the Solar Decathlon
Europe competition, which the faculty entered for the first
time. In the meantime, more than 100 Bachelor’s and Master’s
students have taken part, whether in studios, seminars,
workshops, building weeks or as contributors to the evaluation
phase, which is due in June 2022. The joint search for
answers in design, technical equipment, materiality and
construction is and remains a complex subject area that
we have to grasp, practise and practise holistically. We are
all the more pleased that the commitment of our students
is so high here and that we can and want to face the competition.
Fittingly, it has also become apparent that our
activities in this area of future construction are also bearing
fruit in the acquisition of new visiting professorships. Since
last year, the Sto Foundation has been sponsoring the visiting
professorship Sustainable Materials for a new Architectural
Practice — Entering a circular economy. Prof.
Anupama Kundo, Prof. Maarten Gielen, Prof. Gaspard
Geerts, Prof. Kerstin Müller, Prof. Oliver Seidel, Prof. Peter
van Assche and Prof. Katja Hogeboom will devote themselves
to the development of sustainable building materials and
single-variety construction methods.
With the support of the Wüstenrot Foundation,
we were able to welcome the French landscape architect
Céline Baumann as a visiting professor in the winter semester
2021/22. She is the first of four visiting professors from
the Wüstenrot Foundation who will supplement the courses
offered in the Master's degree programme in Architecture
with contributions on the major social challenges facing
construction until the summer semester of 2023.
