SIEGFRIED (zu Hagen gewendet)
Du riefst mich Siegfried:
sahst du mich schon?
HAGEN
Ich kannte dich nur
an deiner Kraft.
SIEGFRIED (indem er an Hagen das Ross übergibt)
Wohl hüte mir Grane:
du hieltest nie
von edlerer Zucht
am Zaume ein Ross.
(Hagen führt das Ross rechts hinter die Halle ab. Während
Siegfried ihm gedankenvoll nachblickt, entfernt sich auch
Gutrune, durch einen Wink Hagens bedeutet, von Siegfried
unbemerkt, nach links durch eine Türe in ihr Gemach.
Gunther schreitet mit Siegfried, den er dazu einladet, in die
Halle vor.)
GUNTHER
13 Begrüße froh, o Held,
die Halle meines Vaters;
wohin du schreitest,
was du ersiehst,
das achte nun dein Eigen:
dein ist mein Erbe,
Land und Leut’:
hilf, mein Leib, meinem Eide!
Mich selbst geb’ ich zum Mann.
SIEGFRIED
Nicht Land noch Leute biete ich,
noch Vaters Haus und Hof:
einzig erbt’ ich
den eignen Leib;
lebend zehr’ ich den auf.
Nur ein Schwert hab’ ich,
selbst geschmiedet:
hilf, mein Schwert,
meinem Eide!
das biet’ ich mit mir zum Bund.
HAGEN (der zurückgekommen ist und
jetzt hinter Siegfried steht)
Doch des Niblungenhortes
nennt die Märe
dich Herrn?

SIEGFRIED (turning to Hagen)
You called me Siegfried:
have you seen me before?
HAGEN
I recognized you simply
by your strength.
SIEGFRIED (as he hands over the horse to Hagen)
Take good care of Grane for me:
you’ve never held
a nobler breed
of horse by the bridle.
(Hagen leads the horse off right behind the hall. While Siegfried
looks thoughtfully after him, Gutrune, at a sign from Hagen,
unnoticed by Siegfried, also slips out into her room through a
door left. Gunther walks forward into the hall with Siegfried,
offering him hospitality.)
GUNTHER
O hero, be glad as you greet
my father’s house;
wherever you walk,
whatever you see,
do treat it as your own:
my inheritance is yours,
my land, my people:
let my body support my oath!
I offer myself as your man.
SIEGFRIED
I have no lands or people to offer,
no paternal house and grounds:
I inherited only
my own body;
while I live I waste it away.
All I own is a sword,
forged by me:
let my sword support
my oath!
I offer it with myself as your ally.
HAGEN (having returned and now standing
behind Siegfried)
But the Nibelung treasure,
rumour says you are
master of that?
