The Albert Harbor in Dresden is a high-capacity
cargo-handling center for bulk goods and general
cargo as well as containers, with direct trimodal
connections to the most important transport systems
of road, rail and waterways.
It forms part of the Dresden-Friedrichstadt freight transport
hub and is the modern control center for the Sächsische
Binnenhäfen Oberelbe GmbH company, SBO for short,
which has its head office here. As part of a clear distribution
structure, all the logistics processes at the other lo -
cations are controlled from here. Two specially-trained
distribution workers make sure that outstanding customer
care is provided on site. As well as the port at Dresden our
group of companies includes the ports in Dessau-Roßlau,
Torgau, Riesa, Lovosice and Decin. A port-development
program undertaken by SBO created required conditions
to provide a wide variety of services in the field of cargo
handling and logistics for transport and freight-carrying
companies. "All the ports have modern, high-capacity
cargo-handling equipment, while each port has its
own individual characteristics," explains Frank Thiele, di -
rec tor of Distribution, Logistics and Marketing for SBO in
Dresden.
While at the port of Dresden it is possible to load
particularly bulky and heavy goods up to 450 tonnes in
weight directly from a vehicle onto a ship without the use
of a crane, the port of Riesa is distinguished particularly
by its container terminal and depot. The favorable position

of the port at Torgau opens up many possibilities for
activities in the economic area around Leipzig and Halle.
In 2002, SBO founded its Czech subsidiary, CSP, which
operates the ports in Decín ˇ
ˇ and Lovosice. In 2004, In -
dustriehafen Roßlau GmbH was incorporated into the group
of companies. Since then, the port in Dessau-Roßlau, to -
gether with those in Dresden and Lovosice, has developed
into an outstanding services location for the handling of
heavy load and project cargoes.
The total volume of goods handled across all six ports
in 2011 was 2.7 million tons. "An ever-increasing number
of companies recognizes the significance of the ports and
uses them for transporting their goods," said Frank
Thiele. "Because of the integrated networking of the three
modes of transport of the inland waterways, rail and trucks,
freight companies are able to guarantee reliable transport
chains." Around 70 companies with more than 500 em -
ployees are now based at the six port locations and are
able to benefit from their trimodal transport links.
As the director of distribution is well aware, "Over recent
years the demands for cost-effective and environmentally
friendly transport services have risen." In this regard, SBO,
with its three regularly operating shipping lines – ECL2000
(Elbe Container Line), ETS Elbe, (Ecological Transport
Service) and EPL Elbe (Elbe Project Line) – can boast some
very successful projects. There is also the regular Albatross
Express rail connection run by TFG for transporting containers
to Hamburg and Bremerhaven. The harbor com -
pany has therefore been able to establish itself as a
success ful group of companies and an expert logistics
partner for shipping companies.
To make the waterways more transparent and calcu -
lable for freight carriers and other potential users, while
at the same time removing preconceptions about the pe -
culiarities of the Elbe waterway, the SBO created the Elbe
Promotion Center – ElbPro. Free information about inland
waterway transport and shipping conditions is available to
haulers, transport companies, authorities and other interested
parties from the on-line platform at www.elbpro.com.
The scheme is not limited to the German section of the
Elbe, and the information covers the river from the first
dammed level in the Czech Republic all the way to Cuxhaven.
