– Food in Basel II – – City Core: Central Market – Location and map of Borough Market London: Market stalls, Gastronomy and Drinks (http://www.boroughmarket.org.uk/) Borough Food Market - Knowledge, Service, Traceability - Handy for all your food shopping Borough Market – the only fully independent market in London – is owned by a charitable trust, The Borough Market (Southwark), run by a board of volunteer trustees. “What Borough offers is an experience; an echo, for those who can afford it, of the excitement that food markets once brought to the cities. Borough is not about buying food at all, it is about celebrating it.“ - Carolyn Steel (“Hungry City”, p.107) Since roman times there has been trading at the site of todays Borough Market: as far back as 1014, London Bridge attracted traders selling grain, fish, vegetables and livestock. In the 13th century traders were relocated to what is now Borough High Street and a market has existed there ever since. In 1755, the market was closed by Parliament, but a group of Southwark residents bought a patch of land known locally as The Triangle and reopened the market. Today the market still feeds this core community and has grown to over 130 individual stalls. Alongside the original fruit, vegetables, bakers and butchers it now offers a huge variety of produce. Borough market is located in Southwark, south of the tames river by the London bridge connecting it to the City of London. It is accessible by bus, train and metro (Borough / London Bridge). The market is open to all sides, the main entrance is at Southwark Street. Opening hours are Thursdays 11am - 5pm, Fridays 12pm - 6pm and Saturdays 8am - 5pm.
