Selected Projects and Proposals Several proposals, projects and developments have affected or will possibly affect the situation between the market square and Schifflände over time: In 1899 the architect F. Keck proposed the construction of a public townhall on the rhine, combining different functions on the Mittlere Rheinbrücke. Students of Studio Basel later used that idea to develop a project enlarging the Mittlere Rheinbrücke and creating a central city square. The transformation of Spiegel- and Petersgasse with the buildings “Storchen” and “Spiegelhof” are a partial result of the project “Talentlastungsstrasse“: Right through the “Altstadt” the state wanted to build the multi-track “Talentlastungsstrasse”, which would have lead through Spiegel-, Schneider- and Münzgasse as well as Gerbergässlein to Barfüsserplatz and further through Steinenvorstadt. In 1936 the building of “Spiegelhof” was sanctioned, which lead to the demolition of the medieval urban structure around Petersberg and Spiegelgasse. Therefore also part of the “Börse“ was torn down to make room for the railway. The new Spiegelgasse contained a new tram track to discharge the traffic situation at Schifflände, which was taken in operation in 1938. In the early nineteensixties the second track leading from Schifflände to Blumenrain was removed and a curved track from Fischmarkt to Marktgasse as well as a direct connection between the bridge and Blumenrain were introduced. – Food in Basel II – – City Core: Central Market – Studio Basel (Lea Gnöpf/Charlotte von Moos): Introduction of a central Square on the rhine by enlarging the bridge (http://www.sautervonmoos.com/) “Herzstück Regio-S-Bahn” proposes a new train connection between the three stations Basel SBB Badischer Bahnhof and later St. Johann. The five S-Bahn lines S1, S3, S4, S5 and S6 should be combined and arrive at “Herzstück“ every seven minutes. The specification “Mitte“ combines the S-Bahn lines from north-western Switzerland and south Baden under the city center of Basle. The centers of Gross- and Keinbasel should each be serviced by an intermediate station. The total costs are about 1.2 to 1.5 billion CHF. The current “Richtplan Basel-Stadt” claims the city centre of Basle to be a cultural centre on a european level, a “social space of experience and leisure”. Centrality slowly loosing it’s significance and customer loss on the other hand show the need for improvement: to preserve and develop the mutifunctional space of the inner city and possibly distinguish between thematical clusters (e.g. “Boulevard, terrace and garden restaurants“), are some of the mentioned goals.
