Installation
Mark a Starting Chalk Line
Establish a straight, level reference line to guide the
positioning of the starter strip and the first course
of siding.
Establish a Chalk Line
Starter
strip
1. Find the lowest point of the sheathing(s) and make a
mark that is 1" above the lowest corner. The bottom
edge of the siding will be 2-1/4" below the mark you
just made. Make sure this point is high enough to
ensure that the bottom edge of the siding is installed
at least 6" above the finished grade or 1" above
surfaces where water may collect.
2. From this mark, snap a level chalk line to the opposite
end of the wall.
3. Repeat the procedure around the entire house.
Aligning the Starter Strip
You must use a starter strip with lap siding. Except when
using vinyl undersill trim as a starter, the starter strip must
be a minimum of 2" wide and 1/4" to 5/16" thick.
Align the top of the starter strip with the chalk line
and fasten.
Good
Recommended Starter Strip Options
for Fiber Cement Siding
Fiber cement siding ripped to 2"
(minimum); all field-cut edges re-sealed
with primer or paint
Better CertainTeed Vinyl Carpentry undersill trim
Best Restoration Millwork PVC skirtboard
NOTE: Do not use treated plywood or pressure
treated lattice as a starter strip. These tend to
delaminate and do not remain flat.
Restoration Millwork ® Skirtboard
Instead of a starter strip, you can also use Restoration
Millwork skirtboard as a starter course for WeatherBoards
Lap siding and Perfection Shingles. Skirtboard is
preferable to a starter strip because it can be installed at
or below grade and it provides the minimum 6" clearance
requirement to the finished grade for fiber cement siding.
Fasten the skirtboard the same way you would install a
trimboard:
XXMake sure the skirtboard is level.
XXFasteners must penetrate a minimum of 1-1/2" through
a flat, solid wood substrate into a framing member.
XXApply skirtboard over framing no greater than 16" on
center. If framing members are greater than 16" on
center, provide additional bracing for fastening.
