The Tulane <strong>Manuscript</strong>s Department is one of <strong>the</strong> world's larger archives of <strong>the</strong><br />
American Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Jewish</strong> experience, with a particular emphasis on preserv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> contributions of <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions and <strong>in</strong>dividuals to <strong>the</strong> cultural<br />
development of New Orleans.<br />
The <strong>Jewish</strong> Studies hold<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> holographic correspondence of<br />
Menachem Beg<strong>in</strong> to Luba K. Gurdus, author of <strong>the</strong> book The Death Tra<strong>in</strong>, which<br />
deals with a Nazi concentration camp dur<strong>in</strong>g World War II. Also relevant are <strong>the</strong><br />
papers of Margarete Bieber, a German classicist, art historian, and author<br />
dismissed by <strong>the</strong> Nazi regime <strong>in</strong> 1933, who subsequently held professorships at<br />
Oxford, Barnard College, and Columbia University, and was awarded <strong>the</strong> highest<br />
honor of <strong>the</strong> American Archaeological Institute. Ruth Dreyfous’ papers <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
her memoir about a European travel<strong>in</strong>g, which comments on <strong>the</strong> chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />
political climate and particularly on Austrian <strong>Jewish</strong> refugees.<br />
