Presently number<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> excess of 170,000 volumes, <strong>the</strong> Theodore E. Cumm<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

<strong>Collections</strong> consist of materials relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>Jewish</strong> history, religion, language,<br />

society, and culture from around <strong>the</strong> world. Current and retrospective materials <strong>in</strong><br />

all languages are collected <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>t, microform, and electronic formats and <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

monographs, serial publications, reference works, dissertations, and conference<br />

proceed<strong>in</strong>gs. While <strong>the</strong> largest number of hold<strong>in</strong>gs is <strong>in</strong> Hebrew and Yiddish, <strong>the</strong><br />

collection <strong>in</strong>cludes materials <strong>in</strong> all western languages.<br />

The Theodore E. Cumm<strong>in</strong>gs Collection of Judaica and Hebraica holds over 500<br />

Eastern European yizkor books (see<br />

The Music Library holds an Oral History Collection conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> recollections<br />

of <strong>Jewish</strong> refugees, especially composers/musicians, most notably <strong>the</strong> archival<br />

material of Ernst Toch and Eric Zeisl.<br />

The Center was established as <strong>the</strong> Oral History Project <strong>in</strong> 1968 and began to<br />

expand <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late seventies <strong>in</strong> response to a grow<strong>in</strong>g professional <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> this<br />

research technique. It was designated a Center by <strong>the</strong> University's Board of<br />

Trustees <strong>in</strong> 1981 and cont<strong>in</strong>ues to <strong>in</strong>crease both <strong>the</strong> number of research projects<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g under its umbrella and <strong>the</strong> services it provides.
