The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies, part of <strong>the</strong> Historical Society of<br />

Pennsylvania (http://www.hsp.org), is a specialized library and museum devoted<br />

to <strong>the</strong> history of immigration and ethnic life <strong>in</strong> America.<br />

The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies holds <strong>the</strong> case files of <strong>the</strong> American Friends<br />

Service Committee, Refugee Services Committee, which was created <strong>in</strong> 1938 to<br />

formalize resettlement work conducted s<strong>in</strong>ce 1931 for Jews want<strong>in</strong>g to leave<br />

Germany and cont<strong>in</strong>ued to do relief and resettlement work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> postwar period.<br />

There is also a United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Adm<strong>in</strong>istration and<br />

United <strong>Jewish</strong> Appeal pamphlet solicit<strong>in</strong>g donations for efforts <strong>in</strong> Europe on<br />

behalf of Jews displaced by World War II.<br />

The <strong>Holocaust</strong>-related collections comprise <strong>the</strong> personal papers of <strong>Holocaust</strong><br />

survivors who later settled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greater Philadelphia region. Also <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong><br />

this group are <strong>the</strong> actions and responses of local <strong>Jewish</strong> organizations to <strong>the</strong><br />

Shoah and <strong>the</strong> result<strong>in</strong>g “Displaced Persons” situation at <strong>the</strong> end of World War II.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r relevant material can be found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society’s case<br />

records of immigration documentation. F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong>re is a collection of yizkor<br />

books.<br />

The Peace Collection conta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> papers of Mercedes M. Randall, who wrote<br />

material for <strong>the</strong> Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF),<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> l944, <strong>the</strong> pamphlet “The Voice of Thy Bro<strong>the</strong>r's Blood,” a plea for<br />

action to help <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jewish</strong> refugees of World War II. In addition to this pamphlet,<br />

<strong>the</strong> papers also conta<strong>in</strong> a large selection of Randall’s own collection of pamphlets<br />

and booklets on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jewish</strong> refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe.<br />
