Dedicated to <strong>the</strong> history of physics and allied fields, <strong>the</strong> Niels Bohr Library is part<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Center for History of Physics of <strong>the</strong> American Institute of Physics (AIP),<br />
located <strong>in</strong> College Park, Maryland. As part of its <strong>in</strong>ternational, cooperative<br />
strategy to preserve and make known <strong>the</strong> history of modern physics and allied<br />
sciences and <strong>the</strong>ir relations with society, <strong>the</strong> Center ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> Library to<br />
provide reference services and save unique materials where o<strong>the</strong>r repositories<br />
would be less suitable.<br />
The Niels Bohr Library conta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> manuscripts of <strong>Jewish</strong> scientists, primarily<br />
physicists, who fled Nazi Germany and cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>the</strong>ir studies, research, and<br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK or <strong>the</strong> UK. These manuscripts <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> papers of Albert<br />
E<strong>in</strong>ste<strong>in</strong>, Paul Rudolph Zillsel, Maria Ste<strong>in</strong>, He<strong>in</strong>rich Gerhard Kuhn, Vivian<br />
Annabelle Johnson, Karl Ferd<strong>in</strong>and Herzfeld, and Paul Peter Ewald. The papers<br />
of Samuel A. Goudsmit, who was detailed to <strong>the</strong> War Department as Chief of<br />
Scientific Intelligence of <strong>the</strong> Alsos Mission which moved with <strong>the</strong> advanc<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Allied forces <strong>in</strong> Europe to <strong>in</strong>vestigate <strong>the</strong> German atomic bomb project, may also<br />
conta<strong>in</strong> pert<strong>in</strong>ent material.<br />
