The Dorot <strong>Jewish</strong> Division is uniquely constituted as both a subject and a<br />

language division. While <strong>the</strong> collection offers commentary on all aspects of<br />

<strong>Jewish</strong> life, it also <strong>in</strong>cludes Hebrew and Yiddish-language texts on general<br />

subjects. About forty percent of <strong>the</strong> Division’s hold<strong>in</strong>gs are <strong>in</strong> Hebrew characters<br />

and <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der are <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r languages, primarily English, German, Russian,<br />

and French. The Division is especially strong <strong>in</strong> bibliographies and reference<br />

works, <strong>Jewish</strong> Americana, history and social studies, Kabbalistic and Hasidic<br />

works, texts by Christian Hebraists, rabb<strong>in</strong>ic responsa, Hebrew and Yiddish<br />

literature, and periodicals and newspapers.<br />

The Dorot <strong>Jewish</strong> Division holds <strong>the</strong> records of <strong>the</strong> Emergency Committee <strong>in</strong> Aid<br />

of Displaced Foreign Scholars, which conta<strong>in</strong>s diverse material about <strong>the</strong><br />

migration of European (often <strong>Jewish</strong>) scholars to America <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1930s and 1940s.<br />

The papers of Saul K. Padover (<strong>Jewish</strong>?), an Austrian émigré who served as
