The Arizona <strong>Jewish</strong> Historical Society (http://asp<strong>in</strong>.asu.edu/azjhs/) is dedicated to<br />

<strong>the</strong> appreciation and awareness of <strong>the</strong> Arizona and Southwestern <strong>Jewish</strong><br />

experience, and <strong>the</strong> preservation of a record of <strong>Jewish</strong> contributions to Arizona’s<br />

political, economic, social and cultural development.<br />

“Shema Arizona” adds a <strong>Jewish</strong> voice to Arizona's history. Sixty-three oral<br />

histories conducted by <strong>the</strong> Arizona <strong>Jewish</strong> Historical Society provide a valuable<br />

and unique resource for understand<strong>in</strong>g how American Jews <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early 20th<br />

century pulled up roots, cont<strong>in</strong>ued a tradition of migration, and became western<br />

Jews.<br />

The oral history project “Shema Arizona” <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>in</strong>terviews with <strong>Holocaust</strong><br />

survivors Albert Eckste<strong>in</strong> and Sara F. Lehman.<br />
