Celebrating African American Heritage through Literacy<br />

and Leadership Program<br />

On February 28, 2013 guest speakers visited each classroom<br />

as part of the African American Heritage through Literacy<br />

and Leadership Program. Activities included poetry, reader’s<br />

theater, short s<strong>to</strong>ries, and/or drama readings. MCES PTA<br />

purchased and donated Coretta Scott King Book Award books<br />

<strong>to</strong> the library in honor of the guest speakers. Each book was<br />

signed by a guest speaker. The speakers were Mrs. Sharon<br />

Cissell, Ms. Dawn Julian, Mrs. Tiffany Roach, Mrs. Louise<br />

Petty, Mrs. Marie Flynn, Mrs. Bazola Holloway, Mrs.<br />

Lorraine Boone, Mrs. Vickie Everett, Mrs. Marty S<strong>to</strong>ne, Ms.<br />

Dianne Bryant, Mr. Roosevelt Pitts, Mr. Horace Wilson, and<br />

Mrs. Mary Stump. Co-chairs were Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Maddox. Pictured: Mrs. Thompson (4 th<br />

Leader in Me<br />

This year, MCES has chosen <strong>to</strong> incorporate Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s 7 Habits of Effective Leadership<br />

“The Leader in Me” in<strong>to</strong> the curriculum. Mr. Carter Biles was recognized at the MCES Celebrating<br />

African American Heritage through Literacy and Leadership Program for his effective leadership skills in<br />

preparing Prezi presentations for classroom teachers and co-teaching with Mrs. Berry during the seventh<br />

and eighth grade library classes.<br />

Severe Weather Preparedness Week<br />

Spencer Den<strong>to</strong>n, Meteorologist from WAAY 31 weather, posted on his face book page that he “had a<br />

great time out at Madison County Elementary School in Gurley talking <strong>to</strong> the first graders about weather.”<br />

Mr. Den<strong>to</strong>n was at MCES on February 27, 2013.<br />

Target Field Trip Grant<br />

<strong>Congratulations</strong> <strong>to</strong> Mrs. Lenoir and Mrs. Weaver! Their first grade classes enjoyed a trip <strong>to</strong> Seussical the<br />

Musical and Ci-Ci’s pizza. A special thank you <strong>to</strong> Target!<br />

The MCHS Boys Basketball Team won the Alabama State 4A Championship! Monterio Birchfield and<br />

Tyrell Clary were named <strong>to</strong> the State All-Tournament Team and Seab Webster was named <strong>to</strong>urnament<br />

MVP. Head coach is Bubba Webster. Assistant Coaches are Pres<strong>to</strong>n Boyd, Blake East and Chasen Uptain.<br />

Trainer is Sean Venckus. The team finished their season with a record of 28 and 5.
