by inland waterway.<br />
• Points at which tugs will be needed to<br />
support travel of vessel.<br />
• Points along the coast that are most<br />
suitable <strong>for</strong> different types of sea and/or<br />
land operations.<br />
• Types of channel markers.<br />
• Points that are most suitable <strong>for</strong> mining<br />
of waterway.<br />
• Effect that mining would have on ship<br />
passage.<br />
• Locations at which waterways narrow<br />
into choke points.<br />
• Other than choke points, locations where<br />
vessels are vulnerable to shore fire.<br />
• Security that is available <strong>for</strong> vessels<br />
(underway, at anchor, or tied up).<br />
• Type of hostile special operations units<br />
that can threaten vessels.<br />
• Local shore security available to protect<br />
vessels once they are docked.<br />
• Type and number of local watercraft<br />
available to move cargo.<br />
• Maintenance capability that exists <strong>for</strong><br />
these vessels.<br />
<strong>Water</strong> <strong>Terminal</strong> Planning Considerations<br />
• Docks along the waterway.<br />
• Local regulations that govern inland<br />
waterway operations.<br />
• Addresses and telephone numbers of the<br />
waterway authorities, if any.<br />
15. Threat<br />
Essential in<strong>for</strong>mation on threat includes the<br />
following.<br />
a. Enemy threat and capability in the<br />
operational area (e.g., air; naval; ground; or<br />
nuclear, biological, and chemical).<br />
b. Description of local overt or covert<br />
organizations from which hostile action can<br />
be expected.<br />
c. Availability of local assets <strong>for</strong> rear area<br />
security operations.<br />
d. In addition to port and/or LOTS operations,<br />
other primary targets in the area (e.g., military<br />
bases, key industrial activities, political and/or<br />
cultural center, satellite communications<br />
facilities).<br />
e. Physical security characteristics of port area.<br />
16. Community In<strong>for</strong>mation<br />
Community in<strong>for</strong>mation should include the<br />
following.<br />
a. General<br />
• Name of town(s) within a 25-mile radius.<br />
• Grid coordinates and longitude and<br />
latitude of the town.<br />
• Size and significance of the town.<br />
• Primary means of livelihood <strong>for</strong> the town.<br />
