XII. ESCHATOLOGY (Doctrine of End Times)<br />

A. Introduction<br />

1. Definition of Eschatology :<br />

a. "The study of the last things or of the future generally"<br />

(M. Erickson, Dictionary, 50).<br />

b. "The doctrine of the last things. This includes all predictive<br />

Scriptures throughout the Bible whether they have been<br />

fulfilled in the past or are yet to be fulfilled" (Swindoll, 9).<br />

2. Cautions in the study of Eschatology :<br />

a. Beware of inordinate curiosity : there are boundaries<br />

(Acts 1:6-8).<br />

b. Beware of undue certainty : there are gray areas<br />

(Lk. 9:43-45).<br />

c. Beware of timid cowardice : there are convictions<br />

(2 Tim. 1:7; 1 Thess. 4:13 a ).<br />

3. Broad areas of Eschatology<br />

a. Personal eschatology<br />

(1) Concerns physical death<br />

(2) Concerns intermediate state<br />

b. General eschatology<br />

(1) Events concerning the return of Christ<br />

(2) Events concerning the new heavens and earth<br />
