2. Intermediate state
a. Defined: that conscious human existence between death and
the resurrection of the body.
b. Comments:
(1) It is a "state" not a place.
2 Corinthians 5:8
"We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the
body and at home with the Lord."
Philippians 1:23
"I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with
Christ, which is better by far;"
(2) It is an interim "state" experienced by both believers and
unbelievers (cf. Lk. 16:19-31; note the two different states –
yet prior to the resurrection).

John 5:28-29
"Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all
who are in their graves will hear His voice 29 and come
out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those
who have done evil will rise to be condemned."
