SIGHT, HEARING, SMELL, TASTE, and the SENSIBIL­<br />

ITY OF THE SKIN.<br />

After the corroboration of this fundamental fact, the experiment<br />

was <strong>com</strong>menced by putting the tips of the fingers of Mrs. Z. into<br />

contact with the various pieces of pumice stone, each duly labelled.<br />

Some of these pieces, ( 1, 2, 3, 4) had previously been subjected to<br />

certain preparations, (vide. Annex No. 1), while the Nos. 0, 00, 000,<br />

0000 were in their natural state. Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 were fragments of<br />

the same piece of pumice stone, while the others were bought at different<br />

stores.<br />

RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENT.<br />

1. Organ of Sight:<br />

In every one of the six experiments performed, vision Was obtained;<br />

in the experiment 1, 2, 3, 4, corresponding to the fragments<br />

of the same stone, the vision was identical, while Nos. 000 and 0000<br />

produced altogether different images.<br />

2. Organ of Smell:<br />

While holding Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 (procured from the vicinity of the<br />

stagnant lake, Texcoco) the medium perceived a foul smell in every<br />

one of them. In addition, she perceived with No. 1 (TREATED<br />

WITH TINCT. OF ASAFETIDA) a very disagreeable odor, unknown<br />

to her, and in No.4, the pungent odor of sulphur (PIECES<br />

SUBJECTED TO FLAMES AND VAPOR OF BURNING<br />

SULPHUR).<br />

3. Organ of Hearing:<br />

Out of the six pieces submitted to the experiment, only one gave<br />

positive results, No.2 (PIECE ENCLOSED IN THE CASE OF<br />

A WALL CLOCK FOR THREE WEEKS).<br />

4. Organ of Taste:<br />

Out of six pieces, four gave a distinct sensation of foul taste<br />

(Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, FROM THE STAGNANT LAKE); In addition,<br />

No. 1 gave an exceedingly bitter taste (PIECE TREATED WITH<br />

TINCT. GENTIAN A) and No.3 gave a sweet taste (PIECE SUB­<br />

MITTED TO A SOLUTION OF SUGAR AND SACCHARIN).<br />
