• Measure thermal characteristics of the drive train after stabilization at rated power.<br />

• Run a gearbox endurance test equivalent to 20 years turbine operation.<br />

• Verify sufficient lubrication in idling situations without grid (oil supply pump not running)<br />

with different oil temperatures.<br />

The unit was tested from November 2002 until February 2003 for a total of 1,600 hours of test<br />

time. The target test torque load was approximately 130% of the design load to accelerate test<br />

time to equal gear tooth fatigue of 20 years. A teardown inspection of the gearbox was performed<br />

following the testing. The conclusions of the inspection were that after a test of fatigue<br />

damage equal to the design life of 20 years, the transmission was in serviceable condition. There<br />

were no components with breakage or extraordinary wear.<br />

3.1.3 Controls System Design<br />

The coupling of pitch and torque control was identified as a promising concept in the concept<br />

studies phase of the project and is incorporated in the POC turbine. The POC main control cabinet<br />

is illustrated in Figure 22.<br />
