191.—For war in A.sia again.st Antiochus, Rome had allies ready in Asia, viz., Eumenes, King of Pergamum, the Rhodians,<br />

Samiis, Chius, and Lesbus.<br />

Cains Livius, with the Roman fleet, sails from Delus to Chius, and then appears offPhocaea, which opens its gates to<br />

him. Eumenes of Pergamum joins him here with 50 ships.<br />

Antiochus, who had sailed to the Chersonese, (^uits the Hellespont and returns to Ephesus. His fleet puts out from<br />

Cyssus.<br />

The Romans from Phocaea make for Coryeum promontory, and fall in with the fleet of Antiochus. The latter are<br />

routed, and retire to Ephesus.<br />

The Romans enter Cyssus, thence sail to Chius, Phoenicus and Phocaea, and winter at Canae.<br />

Antiochus winters in Phrj'gia.<br />

190. —A Roman expedition from Canae, where the fleet wintered, lays waste Thyatira.<br />

Livius brings the Roman fleet into the "Achaean Harbour," thence to Iliuui, on his way to the Hellespont to<br />

transport Roman troops. He receives the surrender of Sestus and besieges Abj'dus.<br />

The fleet of .\ntiochus sails from Ephesus, puts in at Pygela, crosses to Samus, and proceeds towards Panormus,<br />

where it falls in with the Rhodian fleet and shatters it.<br />

Livius thereupon raises the siege of Abydus, sails with Eumenes to Phocaea, then held by a garrison of Antiochus,<br />

and then, by way of Erythrae and Coryeum, makes for Saiinis, eSecting a junction with the Rhodians.<br />

Antiochus' fleet attempts to intercept them by going to Jlyonnesus promontory and to the island of Maoris, but,<br />

failing, returns to Ephesus. The Romans on their junction with the Rhodians attempt, to entice the enemy out<br />

of Ephesus, but fail. They then retire to Samus.<br />

L. Aemilins PauUus now arrives to take command at Samus. Part of the fleet is detached to lie outside Ephesus ;<br />

part sails past Jliletus, Myndus, Halicarnassus, Cnidus, and Cos to Rlio
