Eumenes evacuates Susa, except the citadel, and withdraws behind the deep river Fasitigris, keeping the bridge over<br />

it in his command.<br />

Antigonus enters Susa and besieges the citadel. Thence he advances to the Copratas, a tributary of the Fasitigris,<br />

and sends half his troops across the Copratas.<br />

Eunieues rapidly crosses the Fasitigris and surprises those troops of Antigonus that had crossed the Copratas, and<br />

defeats them.<br />

Antigonus abandons further advance and betake.s himself to Hadaca, on tlie Eulaeus river. Here he decides to march<br />

to Ecbatana in Media, choosing a route through the cool mountain land of the C'ossaei. The Cossaei repulse his<br />

vanguard, and after severe fighting Antigonus reaches Media in nine days.<br />

Eumenes marches to PersepoTis.<br />

Antigonus and Eumenes now march to meet one another. Their armies come into touch in Paraetacene, and encamp<br />

opposite one another for some days, both intending to pass the winter in Gabiene.<br />

An indecisive battle, foned on by Antigonus, takes place near Gabiene. Antigonus then retreats to Gadamarga in<br />

Media, and Eumenes remains at (iabiene.<br />

Antigonus resolves to surprise Eumenes, and takes a nine days' march for the purpose. His march is detected, and<br />

he tinds Eumenes ready for battle.<br />

The battle here lasts for two days and is indecisive, but Antigonus captures Eumenes' camp and baggage, and<br />

Eumenes is put to death.<br />

Antigonus returns to Media, takes Feithon by treachery and puts him to death.<br />

316.— Antigonus, in the spring, goes to Ecbatana, and thence to Fersepolis. After making certain changes in the satrapies he<br />

marches to Susa and thence to Babylon.<br />

Seleucus, alarmed for his own safety, flies to Ftolcmy in Egypt.<br />

Antigonus continues his march from Babylon to Cilicia, halts at Mallus, and sends his troops into winter quarters.<br />

Antigonus is now master of all Asia except Syria, which belongs to Ptolemy.<br />

Ptolemy, Cassander, and Lysimachus now combine against Antigonus. Seleucus intrigues with Ptolemy to get back<br />

Babj'lonia.
