to inadequate and unreliable data. The working c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s prevailing in these looms are<br />
highly inappropriate. Basic amenities like safe drinking water and toilet facilities are<br />
absent. The spatial distributi<strong>on</strong> of n<strong>on</strong>-formal schools in the carpet weaving belt is highly<br />
c<strong>on</strong>centrated and comparatively less than the demand. Dropout rates and attendance<br />
records of the enrolled children in these NFE schools were related to provisi<strong>on</strong> of<br />
multiplicity of activities, especially mid day meals, stipend to children and quality of<br />
educati<strong>on</strong> provided by teachers. NGOs have been able to create a c<strong>on</strong>ducive atmosphere in<br />
these rural areas by enrolling large proporti<strong>on</strong> of girls. Recommendati<strong>on</strong> derived were<br />
related to : generati<strong>on</strong> of employment opportunities; coordinati<strong>on</strong> to integrate government<br />
efforts with voluntary organizati<strong>on</strong>s; strengthening, m<strong>on</strong>itoring and evaluati<strong>on</strong> of NFE<br />
special schools, and lastly, the initiati<strong>on</strong> of awareness generati<strong>on</strong> programmes.<br />
