tuberculosis (2.3% males), respiratory infecti<strong>on</strong>s (15%), and diarrhoea (13%). A majority of<br />

them did not know the symptoms of diseases, availability of treatment and sources of<br />

immunizati<strong>on</strong>, etc. For the physical and mental development of working children, some<br />

special safeguards are needed such as the existing child labour laws need to be enforced<br />

more effectively; the Government should appreciate those villages and panchayats where<br />

there are no working children; and all the Government departments should work together in<br />

order to eliminate the evil of child labour. The Government should make sincere efforts to<br />

promote the small family norm which would help to reduce fertility and the number of family<br />

members who have to be fed within the limited resources available.
