favored its senior patron Martin over St. Martial with two feasts for Martin as well as
selected saints of Tours associated with Martin; 22 yet the sanctoral of St. Yrieix as a
whole favored the saints of Limousin monastic usage, perhaps as a mark of loyalty to the
ancient monastic traditions of St. Yrieix. In Pa903 the selection of the regional feasts, the
selection of chants for the feasts, the inclusion of traditional Gallican feasts and
antiphons, as well as the newly composed and Gallican- influenced elements of the Mass-
- each of these is a salient feature of the Gradual of St. Yrieix, and all would reflect the
stance of St. Yrieix in Aquitaine.

the monastery of St. Martin of Tours was converted to the collegiate church of St. Martin of
Tours in the ninth century. Thus while Aredius bequeathed St. Yrieix to the monastery of St.
Martin as a dependency, by the eleventh century St. Yrieix had been a dependency of the
collegiate church of St. Martin for more than a century.
22 The Viscounts of Limoges, who actively supported St. Yrieix, had altered their relationship to
the Monastery of St. Martial by negotiating (for their own benefit) the transfer of St. Martial to the Abbey
of Cluny as a dependency.
