that are not used in the Pa903 formulary for these Masses. The chants for these tropes
are Gregorian, found in AMS, but each of the chants in the Mass formularies for these
feasts in Pa903 is a neo-Gregorian chant. The neo-Gregorian Mass chants of these
Propers are addressed in Chapter V.
There are various possible reasons for these discrepancies in the trope
assignments. First, the tropes for the Gregorian chants in Pa903 may work effectively
with the neo-Gregorian chants of the assigned Masses, so that no alteration to the trope
was necessary. However, this is not likely for disparate sets of tropes and chants, since
details of modal and textual phrasing must match. Second, this may be an inadvertent
error: the tropes may have been copied from an exemplar that did not match the specific
chants of these five Masses, or the formularies for these Masses were changed in the
gradual after the troper section was written (by the same scribal hand). But given the
prominence of these saints in the usage of St. Yrieix, these seem to be implausible
explanations for the discrepancies. The fact remains that the tropes of these Masses do
not match the feasts to which they are assigned. More of this kind of error will be
discussed in the next section.
A second group of tropes with discrepancies in trope assignments (marked by a
double asterisk in Table 4-3) is given in Table 4-5 that lists sets of tropes prepared for
feasts not found in Pa903. With the exception of the feasts of the Nativity of St. Mary
and of St. Michael (both in lacuna), these omitted feasts refer to a group of Common
Masses that is not present as such in Pa903. The tropes are assigned to feasts for one or
several martyrs, confessors, and virgins, respectively.
