Chapter 6 48 The installation 6.4 Protection of the visible frame surface DIN 18355 joinery works applies to the protection of the com- pleted units. It is advisable to agree individual measures with the client. If the visible surfaces are not covered at the factory, it is advisible to cover them with a protective plastic foil as protection of the frame surfaces against soiling, trans- port or installation damages, PU-foams etc. These protective foils, even if they are applied at the factory, shall be removed after the installation. 6.5 Window cleaning The cleaning of the windows includes the removal of any contamination, which is caused during installation by the con- signee (e.g. contamination of the atmosphere is not part of this contamination). Only cleaning agents recommended by the system's manu- facturer are to be used. Any PU-foam, adhering to the windows, should be removed immediately before it cures. 6.6 Final control After the completion of the installation works, the function of all opening parts is to be tested for mobility. These tests have to be recorded. 6.7 Maintenance As all other building components windows need maintenance for the preservation of their performance capability. The leg- islator has taken account of this fact and requires in the Ger- man Building Regulations of the Land, notably in the Muster- bauordnung (“Exemplary Building Regulations”) (§ 3(2)): “Building products may only be used with correct performance capable.” Measures for the conservation of value are also demanded by the Construction Products Directives and by the Bauproduk- tengesetz (“Construction Products Law”). The thereto neces- sary terms and measures are defined in DIN 31051. For this reason, the facts mentioned above and the possibil- ity of maintenance contracts in reference to the VFF-Techni- cal leaflets WP01 up to WP04 “Maintenance”, should be pointed out to the user after the completion of the installation. 6.8 Ventilation The ventilation should be controlled, independently of the window, by adjustable ventilation facilities according to DIN 1946-2 and DIN 1946-6, which covers the basic equip- ment of buildings. This must be arranged during the planning. It is not the function of the window sealings to ensure the basic ventilation (0,5/h). To prevent structural damage as a consequence of the effect of moisture from the interior, especially in case of the recon- struction of old buildings, where local ventilation systems normally do not exist, the need for basic ventilation by the regular opening of the windows is to be pointed out to the RAL-GÜTEGEMEINSCHAFT KUNSTSTOFF-FENSTERSYSTEME user. 6.9 Hand-over to the customer After the completion of the installation and proper cleaning of all windows and doors, the hand-over to the customer of the finished project (VOB/B, § 12) is to be confirmed in writ- ing.
