"Catching thc Thirds" was a chasing game played on the Labrador. 1912-1916:
We used to have a place way up [on Cut Throat Island and] there was a lot
ofgirls there from Brigus, North River, Cupids, girls and men. I)oor Mary

used to go up there catching the thirds. A wonderful game, no mistake. Put

three would go where the two was al. Thcre was a big ring of us, I suppose

"Phillips:' he'd say. "hurry up and find the screws and wc'd go and
