nceded to escape. in fantasy at least. from their austere cm'ironment and their limited
means for dealing \\;th it. The stories point out the dangers the fishcrmen wcre cxposed
to: death. the supernatural. loneliness. foreigncrs, stonns and dogs. They also show me
jO)S of living on the Labrador: going to new placcs, meeting nc\\ peoplc. acquiring
unusual gifts and a wealth ofstories for the peoplc back home.
