Eighth Academic Evening
The Annual Academic Evening was
established in 1993 as a forum for the
display and celebration of ongoing
research and academic activity by
fellows, residents, graduate students,
medical students, undergraduates, and
nurse anesthetists working in the research
groups within the Department
of Anesthesiology. Submitted abstracts
are initially scored by a committee of
faculty members. A subset of abstracts
is thereby selected for poster presentation
to the Guest Judge at the Academic
Evening. All individuals who submit
abstracts are invited to present their
work at the poster-discussion session.
Each poster presenter provides a brief
tour of the poster and participates in
a discussion session led by a senior
faculty member and attendees of the
Academic Evening.
Presentations are followed by a
lecture, dinner, discussion and awards
by the Guest Judge. Previous Judges
have included Roger L. Royster, M.D.,
Donald S. Prough, M.D., Thomas F.
Hornbein, M.D., John Kampine, M.D.,
Ph.D., James C. Eisenach, M.D., Richard
J. Traystman, Ph.D., and Steven Shafer,
M.D. The Academic Evening is
approved for 3.0 hours in Physician’s
Recognition Award Category I of the
American Medical Association.
In 2000, we were honored to have
as Guest Judge, Margaret Sedensky,
M.D., Ph.D., Professor, Department of
Anesthesiology, Assistant Professor,
Department of Genetics, Case Western
Reserve University School of Medicine.
Dr. Sedensky presented a superb and
entertaining lecture entitled: “Trends in
anesthesia research: To infinity and
beyond.”
Interest in this event is reflected
by the fact that we received 43 abstracts
and hosted over 100 attendees. This
year's event was generously supported
by Abbott Laboratories, Aspect Medical,
AstraZeneca LP, Roche Pharmaceuti-
cals, Organon, Inc., Purdue Pharma
L.P., and Glaxo Wellcome, Inc.
A gala dinner was then held. Dr.
Sedensky presented awards in the following
categories (embellished with
her own gift of T-shirts from the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame):

The Dick Smith Award honors
L. Richard Smith, Ph.D., who passed
away in 1996. Dr. Smith not only provided
many years of superb statistical
support to our Department, but also
epitomized qualities of intellect, selfeffacement,
wisdom, good humor and
immense personal courage. He serves
as a role model for us all.
The Department is indebted to Mrs.
Elizabeth Barbee, Mrs. Beverly Hester,
Ms. Jessica Harris and Ms. Kimberly
Westbrooks who performed the organizational
duties resulting in the great
success of the event.
The 2001 Annual Academic
Evening is scheduled to be held May 1,
2001, and Guest Judge will be Alex
Evers, M.D. from Washington University.
