and Muir, produced an abstract for presentation
at SOAP 2000 comparing the
anesthesia manpower required for patients
using patient controlled epidural
pumps versus continuous infusion
pumps. This retrospective look at our
data lends support to a prospective
study comparing PCEA modalities
under the supervision of Dr. Terry
Breen. Dr. Bell presented the results
of a prospective analysis of anesthesia
time requirements for management of
a labor service at the ASA as a follow
up to her retrospective study published
in 1999.
John R. Schultz, M.D. the most
recent addition to the divisional roster,
is continuing a study to evaluates the
addition of IHIL blocks to neuraxial
narcotics after cesarean section can
reduce the dosage of narcotics and
unwanted side effects. This industrious
young man is also directing a study
evaluating a new simpler form of EKG
monitoring, working on collaborative
projects with Dr. T.J. Gan, and exploring
laboratory research with Dr. James
Reynolds.
Adeyemi J. Olufolabi, M.B., B.S.,
FRCA continues to spearhead an investigation
of TEG and bleeding tendencies
Departmental Support Staff
in severe pre-eclampsia. He is also conducting
a study looking at BIS levels and
suggestion under anesthesia. In 2001,
he hopes to conduct a study using near
infrared spectrometry (NIRS) to evaluate
placental blood flow.
Terrance W. Breen, M.D., FRCP(C)
is organizing a multi-center study to
look at ED-95 doses of local anesthetic
for induction of labor analgesia. He
as well, will be starting a collaborative
study with obstetrics to look at PCEA
modalities and obstetric outcomes. He
has recently been named as the QI
Director for our Department and has
taken this job on with vigor.
Ellen M. Lockhart, M.D. continues
to work on her laboratory based investigations
of progesterone and brain protection.
Scott E. Helsly, M.D., Ph.D., one
of our up and coming Residents, under
the tutelage of Dr. Terrance Breen, presented
a retrospective evaluation of the
risk of total spinal when spinal anesthesia
is administered after failed epidural,
both at the departmental research day
and at the ASA this year.
James D. Reynolds, Ph.D. moved
to the position of the Director of the
Obstetric Anesthesia Research Labora-

tory and has developed collaborative
relationships in his laboratory research
with the Department of Surgery.
Personnel
In the year 2000, the Division saw major
changes in personnel and administrative
structure. Early in the year we were
saddened by the departure but delighted
by the promotion for Mary Carnell to
the office of Grants and Contracts. This
was followed by a move by Dr. John
Booth to the Cardiac Division. John
will be missed on the clinical service,
however, he will continue to explore
his research interests on the genetics
of preterm labor. This year we also saw
changes in our CRNA membership with
the departure of Robert Foy and Mary
Murphy, both to positions at the Ambulatory
Surgery Center. They are both
missed by their colleagues. In July we
saw the departure of our leader, Dr.
Donald Penning to an exiting administrative
position in Toronto, Canada.
He was replaced by Dr. Holly Muir, who
will move the interests of the Division
in new directions.
