DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY ANNUAL REPORT

The Annual Resident Graduation
and Awards Banquet was held on June
17, 2000 at the Hope Valley Country
Club. Over 150 Department members
and families attended the event, our
opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments
of the graduating resident
class. Many awards were given to faculty
and residents. Dr. Reves presented
the Robert N. Sladen Teacher of the
Year award to John C. Keifer, M.D. and
Dr. Lineberger presented the VA
Teaching award to Thomas E. Buchheit,
M.D. Several medical student teaching
awards were presented by Dr. Kathryn
King, including awards to Kurt J.
Knauth, M.D. and Julie Z. Woosley,
M.D. as Resident Teachers of the Year,
and B. Will Curtis, M.D. for the Outstanding
Resident Contribution to Medical
Student Education. Carleen E.
Bagnall, CRNA was the recipient of the
Medical Student CRNA Recognition
award, and Bryant Stolp, M.D., Ph.D.
received the Medical Student Faculty
Recognition Award.
Dr. John Eck presented certificates
to each of the interns as they completed
the internship year, and our Departmental
fellows were acknowledged
by their program directors.
Christopher M. Kerr, M.D. received
the award for Outstanding Graduate
Resident in Anesthesiology. Drs. Garrett
Scales and Bo Wu were recognized for
their contributions as Chief Residents,
and Drs. Will Curtis and Christopher
Kerr were acknowledged for their work
as Teaching Scholars. Drs. Will Curtis,
Adil Kamal, and Garrett Scales were
recognized with certificates acknowledging
completion of ten liver transplants.
Andrew J. Hartle, M.B., Ch.B.,
FRCA presented Dr. Laura Kihlstrom
with the Golden Tuohy Award, resulting
from a particularly difficult call night on
the obstetric service.
In October Dr. Peter DeBalli represented
the Department as our resident
representative for the ASA resident
section meeting in San Francisco, CA.
Similarly, Dr. Cathleen Peterson-Layne
was sponsored as our FAER scholar
at the same meeting.
The sixth annual Alumni Evening
was held on November 3 at the Siena
Hotel in Chapel Hill, and was organized
by Katherine P. Grichnik, M.D., MS and
Peter D. Dwane, M.D., C.M., FRCP(C).
Residents and their guests were treated
to a nice dinner and then were addressed
by Drs. Charlene Elliott, Scott
Howell, Steve Rogers and Joshua
Schwartz who provided them with
advice and insight into various practice
situations. It is always nice to hear from
our alumni and see their post-Duke
accomplishments.
Summary
Duke Anesthesiology is fortunate to
have the resources of talented faculty,
residents and fellows, in addition to a
rich clinical environment in which to
work. We look forward to another year
of learning and professional growth.
