therapy. This year’s fellow, Dr. Adil
Kamal, has learned techniques in fluoroscopically
guided injections, neurolytic
procedures, implantation therapies,
diagnostic discography, and radiofrequency
lesioning. Clinical and
teaching activities have also continued
at the VA pain clinic, directed by Dr.
Joel Goldberg.
Additionally, the year 2000 has
been an active time for establishment
and improvement of educational policies
as guided by the ACGME. We are
working toward our ultimate goal of
making the Duke Anesthesiology Pain
Management Fellowship a model program
in the United States.
Outside interest in the pain fellowship
has also increased, and a total
of 35 completed applications were received
for the 2001 position. The position
has been filled, and applications
have already arrived for the academic
year 2002. The division looks forward
Research has continued in the
division as Dr. Huh is investigating
yohimibine infusion as a diagnostic test
for the presence of Complex Regional
Pain Syndrome. In addition, he is looking
into the effects of high concentration
local anesthetics in facet joint injections.
Dr. Fras has a protocol for the
examination of various neurotransmitters
in the CSF of patients with chronic
pain syndromes. Dr. Ginsberg continues
his investigation into new agents for the
medication management of acute pain.
Dr. Urban with Dr. Carlos Nebreda
published a textbook on chronic pain
treatments in Spanish.
Bruno J. Urban Honored at Grand Rounds December 6, 2000
Bruno J. Urban, M.D., Dr.med. came to Duke 28 years ago and continuously served
on our clinical faculty until December 31, 2000. That is more than a quarter of a
century of dedication to Duke University and this Department—a loyalty for which
we are most grateful.
Careers often have beginnings and ends that make sense. Bruno and Dr. Blaine
Nashold established the first pain clinic in Duke South in 1974. They were codirectors
of this clinic which has remained in service at Duke South for 26 years.
We have a new pain clinic and it is co-directed by one of Dr. Urban’s protégées,
Dr. Anne Marie Fras. This new Pain Clinic and new co-directors bring a new beginning
as we celebrate both the beginning and the end of Dr. Urban's active faculty
status.
Dr. Urban was granted the title of Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology and
was also honored by Dr. Ralph Snyderman. We wish to honor Bruno and his wife,
Ingeborg, for the many patients that have benefited from his dedication, for the
countless resident and fellows who have learned the art and science of pain
management from Dr. Urban. We are hopeful that Dr. Urban will join our “front
row Emeriti Professors” when time permits and that he will have a long and healthy
retirement. We will all miss his no-nonsense approach and dedication to excellent
care.
