Armed Forces Day evolved in the ILS. over a 200-year period

The third Saturday of May
has been designated as Armed
Forces Day since 1950. It
is neither a legal nor a public
holiday. However, it is the one
day in the year when
American citizens may visit
all military installations in
the United States and abroad.
No passes are needed, just
drive or walk into the installation
grounds and
wander around.
Depending on the installation
visited, you will seei
the latest in military hardware,
warships in the Navy
yards and various types of
planes at the air fields.
For many years, the
various branches of the armed
services held open house
on the anniversary of their
beginning. Some still do. But
today, all take part in Armed
Forces Day. In 1947, two
years after the end of World
War II, Congress organized
the Department of Defense

with representatives from all
services. The need for such a
group was very apparent,
during the war.
The Army is the oldest
military branch in the United
States. In 1775, one year
before the 13 colonies
declared their independence
from England, the Continental
Congress authorized
the formation of 10 companies
of riflemen for both defense
and offense. These 10 companies
were the nucleus for
the Continental Army. The
date of organization was June
14,1775. Flag Day js also June
14.
In 1928, through the efforts
of the Military Order of World
Wars, composed of veterans
of World War I, Army Day
was officially recognized. The
first date was May 1; at a
later date this was changed to
April 6, the anniversary of the
beginning of World War I.
This latter date was set by a
concurrent resolution of
Congress on March 16, 1937.

organized October 27, 1775,
when a committee of the
Continental Congress
recommended the purchase of
merchant ships that could be
turned into warships, capable
of battling British warships
and capturing cargo vessels'.
This date was the birthday of
President Theodore
Roosevelt, the 26th President.
As under-secretary of the
Navy under President
William McKinely, Teddy
Roosevelt did much to build
up the Navy. When the
. Spanish War started in 1898,
Roosevelt ordered Commodore
(later Admiral)
George Dewey to take his
Pacific Fleet to Manila in the
Philippines and destroy the
Spanish Fleet. The Spanish
Fleet was practically annihilated.
In 1922, a group of
interested persons recommended
that Navy Day be
October 27. That same year
President Warren Harding
issued such a proclamation.

organization that started in
1775 on the 10th of November

and Robert C. Ordille, dance chairman, of Ocean City. The ceremony
took place during a cocktail-dance at Greate Bay Country Club to benefit
the hospital's emergency room fund drive. Both award recipients were
serving as volunteer orderlies at SMH last December when they happened
upon the accident on Somers Point-Mays Landing Rd.

(Fla.) University on April 21.

- was the Marine Corps. This is
a part of the Navy and is the
land fighting unit. The ships
bomb the target, the marines
go ahsore and finish the Job.
Some of the toughest battles
of the Japanese war were
fought and won by these
Marines.
The Air Force is the newest
service organization. The
early air force was part of the
Signal Corps of the Army. It
was not until 1947 that the
United States Air Force
became a separate unit.
During World War II. when
the Air Force had done such
heroic work, it was still a part
of the Army.
Although the U.S. Coast
Guard is a civilian group, it
takes a definite part in war.
The Coast Guard was
organized August 4, 1790 and
was known as Revenue Cutter
Service. Its duties concerned

Installation of the Camden
4ESS began in July 1978 and
was completed in March. The
machine replaces two electromechanical
switchers' in
Camden and takes over long
distance switching that had
been done in Atlantic City.
The new switching system
was designed by Bell
Laboratories and
manufactured by Western
Electric. It to one of a family
of electronic switching
systems designed to handle
both local and long distance
calls.
