Sports scene loses good friends
By TOM WILLIAMS
Sports Columnist
Talking with Joe Kish about sports each day was almost as
interesting and as informative as reading the newspapers we
bought from him.
Like many other Ocean City residents, we looked forward
to stopping by Joe's place to find out how he felt about the
Eagles game that week or the Phillies chwcfn \n the
playoffs.
Joe was especially outspoken about Joe Namath, Dick
Allen (he called him "Richie") and Howard CoaeU. He
always discussed the newest developments on the sports
scene so well that reading those newspapers only told you, in
more detail, what Joe had already mentioned.
And what Joe Kish was to the spectator, the fan who liked
to keep track of the accomplishment's of others, Leon
Leon was deeply involved in the Ocean City Youth Athletic
Association's summer baseball program. He coached a team
with great success for many seasons, acted as the league's
treasurer and umpired anytime his services were needed to
get the game underway.
This is, as we all know by now, Ocean City's 100th birthday.
The celebrations have already begun and will probably
continue until almost New Year's Day. It is really a
celebration of people, the people who make this community
unique and whose services and kindnesses make it appeal to
- those who live in it and visit it each season.
Both Joe Kish and Leon Creamer were that kind of person.
Weneed the guy who does more than sell you a newspaper.
Instead he remembers a little bit about you and talks about
things that you are interested in.
And we need the guy who not only gets involved in youth
sports when his kid is playing, but stays on and does
whatever he can so that somebody else's kid can play some
ball.
Both Joe and Leon had sons who were good athletes. Joe
Kish Jr. (called "Jody") was a successful quarterback and
shortstop in Ocean City and now operates the family
business.
Young Leon Creamer is the ace pitcher on Bud Rinck's
Raider baseball team. He earned tremendous respect from
his teammates, and reflected his father's attitudes toward
sports, when he showed up to pitch last Friday rather than
let his team down.
We'll be doing a lot of celebrating in the next seven months.
A community, especially one which owes its success to
its continued appeal to outsiders, deserves to be proud of 100
years of tradition.
But we should also remember to save a place for Joe Kish
and Leon Creamer. It was poeple like them, the kind who did
a little more to make your day more complete, that made
these 100 years possible.
SOCCER
It was tough going for the
Roudies of the recreation
department's spring soccer
league. The team lost to the
Upper Township Bombers on
Saturday,. 7-4.
The Roudies played a good
game with goals scored by
Bill Hopson, Bob (Rodrigez),
Lewis and Jim Patterson who
scored two.
Kevin King has an outstanding
defensive game
along with Trip Snyder who
both gave 101 percent
throughout the game.
The Islanders and the
Jetties, both Ocean City
teams, played to a 5 to 5 tie
with goals scored for the
Islanders by Sarah Quickmire,
one and Matt Brown,
four. Jamie McElgin and Tim
Givens scored two goals each
while Bill McGinnis scored
one on a penalty shot.
It was bad luck for the
Sandpipers. The team lost to
the Colts of Upper Township 5-
By RALPH L. STORK
Spring bluefishing has
arrived. The first showing of
the east coast fishermen's
favorite sport fish showed up
over the weekend.
These big front runners
appeared first in the off-shore
waters of the Five Fathom
Bank and 2 FB. Charter boats
and private' boats trolling
these areas caught these front
runners on red killer squids
and bingle bananas. It Is a
little too early to tell if these
lures will set a pattern for the
fish this season, but they
certainly are effective on the
early run of fish.
Joe McLaughlin and Jim
CDonneU trolled the A.C.
Pots area in 75 feet of water
and caught two bluefish six to
eight pounds. These were also
taken on the red killer squid
and were the first of. the
season.
Bell System develops better ship-to-shore device
The Bell System is improving
The Coastal Harbor Radiotelephone
System, used
primarily by commercial
fishing fleets and recreational
boaters for ship-to-shore
communication at distances
between 30 and 300 miles, is
being refitted with new
electronic circuitry developed
by Bell Labs. The new circuitry,
in kit form for easy
installation, reduces noise
have experienced in the past.
The interference and static
can be caused by storms and
atmospheric problems — the
same difficulties that plague
commercial radio and TV—
and by overlapping of signals
