After successful career '\ .
Local man prepares to mold 4 well-tuned vocal instruments'
ByTOMHALLIGAN
Have you ever noticed the
many mediocre actors, actresses
and game show hosts
who, when appearing on
television variety and talk
shows, come out on stage and
belt out some far-out version
of "My Way" or some other
popular tune; with the end
result sounding like a sheep
caught in a barbed-wire
fence?
And as you rise from the
easy-chair to change to
another station you say to
yourself, "Geez, with a little
training I could sing better
than that."
Well, for all you Johnny
Carson, Al Alberts and Gong
Show hopefuls, Ernest Mc-
Chesney of Ocean City, tenor
and teacher of singing is
waiting to turn that off-key
"Alfalfa" sounding voice into
a well-tuned instrument of
vocal beauty.
McChesney-of 306 24th St.
will be available during the
summer months for private
vocal instruction and
coaching.
McChesney is currently on
the staff of the Manhattan
School of Music where he has
been a member of the vocal
vacuity for the last 20 years.
He has also served as visiting
associate professor of singing
at Yale University.
The 70-year-old tenor has
had a long distinguished
career. He was a leading
tenor of the New York City
Opera Company for 14
seasons, the Chicago and San
Francisco Opera companies
and appeared frequently as
guest soloist with the New
York Philharmonic,
Philadelphia and Cleveland
orchestras.
McChesney and his wife
Anna, a former singing
teacher in the New York City
school system, have spent the
last couple of summers In
Ocean City.
"I love Ocean City," Mc-
Chesney said. "As long as I
am healthy, I can teach.
Ocean City would be a nice
place to retire."
McChesney currently
divides his teaching tune
between the Manhattan
School and his New York City
studio.
Hits will be the first summer
McChesney will be
teaching in Ocean City. He
stated the traveling back and
forth to New York City during
the summer months wasn't
exactly his idea of a good
tune. s,•.
McChesney said he enjoys
the atmosphere of Ocean City
and he has tune to work on his
garden and play the organ
while here. '
McChesney made bis
operatic debut a* Romeo with
the Chicago Opera Company.
The West Orange bom tenor's
career has taken him to 47 of
the 48 states. He has sung in
Canada, England, France and
South America. *
Schneider takes flight on a jet fighter
After spending the better
part of his engineering career
on design and development of
armament and escape
systems for military aircraft,
Jack Schneider of this city
finally had the opportunity to
take a flight in an FlOO super
"It was all the world's
returning from his one-hour,
20-minute flight.
Schneider was taken on the
orientation flight by Air
said, Truehaft put the craft
Even though Schneider was
initiated the arrangements
In the face of all these
setbacks, the pumping was
still finished below cost,
Graham said, because "the
sand has held a lot better than
we anticipated."
Because the borrow area,
where the sand was taken
from, provided "good, coarse
sand," Graham said, "we had
a lot less run-off than the
engineers anticipated."
When dredging like this is
done, engineers set up a
design of what they would like
the beach to look luce. When
that design is roughly
reached, a measurement is
taken of the depth of the
borrow area to see how much
sand has been used. In this
case, the contractor is being
paid a 138,000 start-up fee and
91.57 per cubic yard of sand
pumped.
The city will not actually
receive a refund on the Job,
Graham said, because it has
not paid anything yet. Instead
it will be Wiled for SO percent
of the final cost of the pumping
project, and city council
will nave to make a new
committment to pay for half
of any groins built.
