Hie Ocean City High School
golf team swept the top three
spots in Tuesday's Cape-
Atlantic League individual
championships.
: Senior Jim McKeon fired a
77 to t ake the title for the third
time in the past four years.
Two strokes back was Tim
Rjuhley, followed by Matt
Unsworth who carded an 81 on
the Buena Vista Course.
"I'm very happy with the
way they played, said Coach
Ralph Carson. "I think this
indicates what kind of team
we have, taking the first three
• places in the league individual
championships."
In all, 28 players competed,
four from each of the league's
seven teams. Other top
finishers included Mike Long
of Hammonton (82), Todd
Lante of Sacred Heart (86)
and Joe Sal vatore of Ham-
monion (88). As a result of
finishing in the top six, the
golfers have been named to
ihe league's all-star team and
will receive plaques at next
week's awards dinner. In
addition -to the plaque,
McKeon will receive the
coaches' trophy for finishing
first.
The Raiders' impressive
showing in the individual
championships came in the
wake of the team's only loss
this season a 168-171 defeat at
the hands of Hammonton.
"We played poorly and they
played well," Carson said.
"We gave them a chance to
beat us and they did."
The loss sets up a showdown
next week between the
Raiders and league rival
Sacred Heart. The Lions also
have only one loss this year—
to Ocean City.
The match, to be held at the
B.L. England course
Tuesday, could decide the
league champio ahlp. If
Ocean City wins, the Raiders
will take home their first CAL
title. If the Hearts win, they
must still beat Hammonton
next week to take the
championship.
In other action, the Raiders
finished 12th in a field of 16
teams in last weeks state
tournament at the Bamm
Hollow Course in LJncroft.

Holden takes two firsts
Ocean City girls 9 track team topples Wildwood
; Debbie Holden captured

Carolyn Dilts took second hi
the 110 low hurdles and third
iin the one-mile run to lead the
Ocean City girls' track team
to a 63-55 win over Wildwood
last Tuesday at recreation
field.
Dllts and Sue Mimnagh
finished 2-3 in the low hurdles
to start the afternoon off for
the Raiders. Wildwood's
Ludlle Flacco captured first
place easily with a tune of 17.3
that beat the 18.8 by Dilts.
Wildwood moved out to a 13-
5 lead with a 1-2 finish in the
100-yard dash with Ginny
Feairheller capturing the lone
point with a third place finish.
Ocean City dominated the
next two events to go ahead of
the Warriors 20-16, Holden,
Mary Ann Heck and Dins
finished 1-2-3 in the mile run.
Holden turned in a 5:37. She
has dominated this event all
season. In the 440-yard dash,
Sue Kohlenberger captured
first place while Jessica Mott
took third.
Ocean City got shutout in
the 440 relay and the 220-yard
dash but the mile relay team

At the conclusion of the
running events, the Ocean
CUy girls held a slim 37-36
lead.
Ocean City's slim one-point
lead would not hold up
through the first three field
events as Wildwood took first
place in the long jump, high
jump and shot put.
For Ocean City in the long
jump, Jernee took second
with a jump of 13-feet, n.25
inches and Mimnagh took
third place with a 13-foot, 4%-
inch effort.
In the shot put, Chris Quinn
placed second with a shot of
30.5 feet while Penny Jones
was close behind with a 28-
foot, ll-inch effort for third
place.
With only two events, the
discus and the javelin,
remaining Ocean City trailed
51-49 but the Raiders would
not be denied the win. They
outscored Wildwood 14-4 with
a first and third place finish in
the discus and a 1-2 finish in
the javelin.
Marge Schoenwald won the
discus quite easily with a
throw of 97-feet, 10 inches
while Nicha Seto took third
with a 68-foot, 5.25 inch.
Quinn won the javelin
competition with a 86-foot, 5V4
inch toss and Jones took
second with an 86-feet, 5%
inches. That clinched the
meet, 63-55.
Coach Al Holden now must
prepare his team for the
sectional competition slated
for this Saturday. His entries
in the competition include
Renee Boxmann (two. mile),.
Mimi Henry (880) Debbie
Holden (one-mile), Sue
Kohlenberger (440), Jenny
Trofa (880), Lisa Foglio, (high
jump). Sue Mimnagh (high

Raider senior Ed Megargee
helped Ocean City's slumping
track and field team salvage a
rough week when he won the
flBO-yard run in the Caper
Atlantic League's Meet of
Champions. Megargee was
the only Raider to win a CAL
individual title.
Earlier, in the CAL Relays,
Ocean City finished a
disappointing fourth, though
only 14 points separated them
from champion Hammonton.
Megargee, a successful
distance runner for both
Wayne Colman's tracksters
and Jim Harris' crosscountry
team, edged Stan Williams of
Buena and Raider teammate
MarkTownsend at the finish.

each finished in 2:05.
Jeff McTlgue, a sophomore,
took a second hi the javelin
with a toss of 157-1. He
finished almost eight feet
behind champion John
Richardson of Middle
Township.
Another sophomore, Brian
McDonald, took third in the
two-mile. Greg Rapp of
PleasantviOe won in 10:03.
Bill Nederhoffer, also a
Greyhound, was second in
10:09 and McDonald was next

in 10:18.4.
Junior Mark Dice was the
only Raider to earn ribbons in
two events. Dice was fourth in
both the 440 and the In-
termediate hurdles. He did
the 440 in 53.4, well behind the
new meet - record (50.7)
established by John
Halbruner of Lower Cape
May.
In the hurdles, Dice again
fell victim to. a new record.
Mike Vassar covered the 330
yards in 40.1 seconds, bet-
tering his own mark by three-
tenths of a second. Dice was
timed in 41.3.
Four events, the discus,
pole vaultThigh jump and long
jumo were Dostooned because
of the wet conditions.
In the Relays, the Raider
combo of Tony Edwards and
Mickey Cullinane combined to
capture the lone Ocean City
victory in the high jump.
Their best jumps totaled 12
feet.
Otherwise, It was a tough
afternoon for the Raiders.
They were second in both the
mile relay and the medley
relay. Ocean City took third in
the discus and javelin.
Colman is currently
preparing members of his
squad for this Saturday's
Group Three championships.
Top performers there will
compete on June 2 in the state
championships.
