OCEAN CITY (N.J.) SENTINEL-LEDGER
For garden to grow, get the soil ready
Vegetable gardening
tui did you ever slop to
ihifik aboui how-little time is
sp«nt in the single most import
an' phase—getting the
soil rea'dy?
If you're like most other
people, you get' the garden
rea'dy to plant in one day and
then spend the next 200
worrying over the growth and
health of your plants.
It always seems to happen
that first glorious spring day.
You just, can't wait to get the
soil turned over and those
seeds and "sets" into the
ground.
But, in'your excited rush,
you maybe loosen the soil only
a few inches. It looks great,
other compost) so that the soil
stays loose.
Granted, this takes work
and time. But, it's well worth
the extra effort! You can't
grow grass on trampled down
hardpan—don't expect
vegetables to flourish in a
superficial layer! of topsail.
There are hundreds of tips
and suggestions like this one
in the ul-time favorite gardener's
book. "Down-to-Earth
Vegetable Gardening Know-
How," featuring mastergardener
Dick Raymond. It's
packed with useful information
and can guide you
to your best garden ever.
Here are some more of the
little tricks Dick Raymonds
shares:
When planting tomatoes,
wrap a piece of newspaper
around the stem at ground
level, several Inches into the
soil and several inches out. It
makes an effective,
biodegradable collar to
protect the young plants from
cutworms.
Try planting peas in wide
rows, without supports. You
can get more plants into the
same area, and the yield is
enormous. The vines support
themselves.
Plant radishes around the
beds, even in the rows. Bugs
will attack the radish greens
(not harming the radish root)
and leave the other seedlings
alone. Besides, radshes grow
quickly and help mark the
rows.
Visual examinations
should be thorough I
Not all vision examinations
are alike, says the president
of the Atlantic Cape May
Optometric Society
"It's confusing to the
public," Dr. Peter FMsko
said. "Many people get a
quick five or 10-minute check
or even a vision screening
with an eye chart. They think
they've bad a complete
examination and walk around
with a false senseof security,
about the shapeof their visfcto
and eyes. -, • ; • >< .•; -r >
