BILLOWS
Small things
On Friday, May 4, Ocean City High School
held its annual Junior-Senior Prom. Now, as
all know, the prom is a rather expensive
affair, especially for the guy and can put
quite a hole in his pocket. But usually, it's
worth it. The key word is usually.
To many, however, it was not worth it.
Don't misunderstand. The prom went well.
Too bad some people didn't get there in time
to enjoy it. Why, you ask? Well, it's sort of
hard for the guy to go pick up his date if he
doesn't have anything to wear.
Basically, it can be explained in three
words — Smalls Formal Wear. One could
assume that the first word of the title is an
adjective describing their knowledge of
operating a good business. At least after
Friday night's disaster.
Friday afternoon, there was a rather
sizable number of people at Smalls. They
were not only from Ocean City, but from two
other schools whose proms were the same
evening, along with some people who were
planning to attend a wedding. All were there
expecting to pick up their tuxes, which, by
the way, were prepaid. However, the tuxes
weren't there. The delivery, being a little
late, could have easily been ignored. But
three hours? That's only the half of it. When
the tuxes finally did arrive, there were size
and color mixups, along with some people not
even getting a tux. It certainly seemed to
disprove the saying, "You only get what you
pay for."
One of Ocean City's chaperones had to
have his tux taken right off the manikin, and
one student attending the prom was stuck
. with a pair of shoes three or four sizes too
big. Imagine the "fun" he had dancing. It's a
bjtt, embarxassjngv too, when the tux is the
wrong co|Oa*, .and doesn't even'match the >
&fs drei^^wttcii, as a matter of fact, dfd
happen. And tWhk of the girl, sitting horfte.
waiting for her date to arrive at 6 pjn., and
he doesn't arrive until 8, when the prom
began at 7.
To put it mildly, Ocean City students are
quite annoyed. Rodger Cooney, one of the
victims of this sad situation, was thoroughly
disgusted, stating that he didn't arrive at the
worn until 9:30 and didn't even get anything
to eat. Such was the case of many others
involved with the problem.
The prom is supposed to be a memorable
experience, and it will be. But for some, not
all those memories will be good ones. Said
oneperson, "You would think that a towrinwa
dealing with formal wear would conduct the
business in a formal manner."
Well, , in n an n opinion shared by y many y others, es
Smalls should come up with some "big
solutions.
Year end thoughts
Sousa Award set
The Sousa Award is a
national award created by the
Sousa Foundation. Each year,
one student in a high school
receives this award. Given for
merit, interest, ability and a
high standard of instrumental
music in a public school.
If you are planning to go
into the field of music, the
Sousa Award would be
beneficial because it carries
recognition.
toyOCHS, the band members
nominate people they
feel are deserving of the
award. This year's nominees
for the Sousa Award are Joe
Monxo, Dona Ellis, and Bob
Sborao.
When a member nominates
someone, they have to give a
good reason for feeling the
person is worthy of receiving
the award. After all the
nominations are in, the band
members are given a few
days to think about their
decision. Each nominee is
given a number for voting
purposes. Everyone is given a
piece of paper on which to
write the number of the
nominee they are voting for.
Warren Miller, band
drector, has the last say in
the voting if someone is
nominated that he thinks is
not worthy of the award. The
recipient of the Sousa Award
is announced at the Annual
Band Awards Banquet and is
presented with the award at
that time.
opportunities in foreign
languages and campus tours.
"Ocean City can be proud of
these students. Wait until next
year," comments Mrs.
Pancoast.
Miss Wonder added, "I am
very happy that so many of
our students accepted the
challenge to attend for the
first time and bring back their
experience for the others. I
hope that next year many
more will attend."
