This is a characteristic species in the P.
crocata-group, i.e. taxa having a white medulla,
a cyanobacterial photobiont, yellow
pseudocyphellae on the lower surface and a
chemistry containing stictic acid metabolites,
hopane -6a,7 $,Z?-triol as the dominant triterpenoid,
and the pigments calycin, pulvinic
dilactone and pulvinic acid (Galloway 1988). It
is distinguished by the distinctive marginal
(rarely laminal) lobulate proliferations, and a
smooth upper surface without isidia or soredia.

This species has rather shortly + subdichotomously
branching lobes with a white medulla,
a cyanobacterial photobiont, and white pseudocyphellae
on both upper and lower surfaces.
It has a simple two-hopane chemistry, with
tenuiorin and gyrophoric acid present as
accessories. Formerly known only from eastern
Australia.

P. desfontainii (Delise) Vainio. A palaeotropical
