As a participant on the Nonvegian Svalbard Expeditions 1936, "our Benjamin, the young student Mr. Eilif Dahl" (quotation from Lynge 1938 p. 6) collected an interesting Cetraria specimen which until recently has escaped appropriate scientific attention. The specimen represents C. inermis (Nyl.) Krog, a species which previously was regarded as having an amphi-Beringian distribution with a very limited range (Kirnefelt L979). Dahl collected Cetraria inermis on the SjuOyane archipelago, northernmost Svalbard, at almost 81o northern latitude. The present material has been compared with material from Alaska (O) collected by H. Krog and Pegau. The Svalbard material is up to L.5 cm high and typical in all important characters including marginal pseudocyphellae, subglobose to globose spores, and the presence of lichesterinic and protolichesterinic acids. lateral and substipitate apothecia are richly present. A detailed description of the species is given by Kiirnefelt (1979). Associated species found with Cetraria inermis in the herbarium packet included Sphaerophorus globosus and the bryophytes Pohlia cruda and Potytichum alpinum. The Sju0yane archipelago belongs to the Arctic Polar Desert bne (Elvebakk 1985). The bedrock of Phippsoya is gneissic/schistose (Winsnes 1988) and the habitat is probably oligotrophic. In Alaska Cetrarin inermis is most often corticolous (Kiirnefelt L979). At present no other plant or lichen is known to have a similar distribution pattern. There are several species, mainly bryophytes like Anoectangtam tenuinente, Bryobriaonia longipes, Cryptocolea imbicata, Didymydon johansenii, and Mesoptychia sahlberyii (Frisvoll 1978, 1981) which have related, but less disjunctive patterns. Horton (L982) indicated that most of the disjunctions displayed by these bryophytes reflected insufficient floristic documentation or absence of suitable habitats. Cetraia inermis is one of several rare species of. Cetraria which recently have been published as new to Europe; C. andrejevli was recorded from Finnmark, northernmost Nonray (Alstrup & SOchting 1986) and C. nigricascens from Svalbard (Elvebakk & Tonsberg l99?). Cetrari"a inermis and C. nigricascens both have their most northerly known sites on Svalbard. Specimen examined: Svalbard. Sju6yane, the southernmost peninsula on the Island of Phippsoya, 18 Aug.
